Track record.

I spent the first ten years of my working life assuming other people were better than me because they had started from a better place. They had the schools, the contacts and the confidence, so I let them lead when I should have spoken.

That changed at Sports Direct, where I worked with a great bunch of people and got to watch Karen Byers, number two in the company, who was never out of a tracksuit and was winning all the time through hard work, honesty and fairness. Nobody there cared where you had come from, only what you did next. It taught me that where someone began tells you very little about what they can do today, and that is how I have looked at every business and every person since.

It is also how I chose the people I work with. Every associate at Creating Better has won and lost, and I know their stories because that is why I approached them. I did not want people with a spotless record, I wanted people who have had good days and bad ones and turned up the morning after. They are the ones who will still be there when the trenches are overrun.

So this page is not a list of wins. It is the work we are proud of, the times that were hard, and what each one taught us, because that is what you are really getting when you ask us for advice.
