In early 2019 I acquired McGill, a Scottish construction company that, after 38 years in business, had entered administration. Harry supported our board of directors and the wider team in re-establishing the business. Harry’s experience and expert opinion were invaluable and instrumental in the rapid growth of the company. Back in 2010 when I first met Harry MacLean, he was the CEO of Dundee Football club. The owner of the football club had withdrawn financial support and Harry was trying to manage the club in extremely difficult circumstances. The very existence of the club was at stake at that time.
In my opinion Harry did a tremendous job of managing a number of complex financial, operational, personnel and PR issues all under the gaze of the public eye and with the added emotional pressure from Dundee fans. In addition, Harry gathered financial support from fans and investors which directly enabled the club to successfully emerge from Receivership in 2011 and continue to trade up to the present time.

As our family business transitioned from the fifth into the sixth-generation management, smooth succession and transition was paramount. This coupled with the desire to expand and grow the business meant that we required some senior level counsel and support to help us navigate this process. We were impressed with Harry’s candid approach; having engaged his services for several months now we are very pleased with the scope of support and implementation provided by Harry and the wider team.

Harry has a very practical approach to business improvement, keeping focus on a small number of projects which contribute significantly in delivering the envisioned strategy/improvement. Capability to swiftly understand the business and market dynamics and identify where the key probems are and hint at potential solutions immediately. Involving key people in the organisation, selected on integrity and business acumen, less so on status or verbal power. Keeping metrics understandable and getting the broader organisation on the same page through repetitively sharing the, simple but effective, story (read: strategy). Feels comfortable in sticky situations and dares to take and execute difficult decisions on the spot.
